The first round of election numbers were posted by theKing County Elections Tuesday, Aug. 17, showing Republican challenger Joe Fain leading Sen. Claudia Kauffman in the 47th District. 47th District
In the 47th Senate race, Fain outpaced first term incumbent Kauffman in the first round a counting. Fain was tallying 8,511 votes with about 54 percent and Kauffman came in at 7,084 about 45 percent.
In the 47th state House race for Position No. 1 incumbent Rep. Geoff Simpson, D-Covington, held a slim lead over Republican challenger Mark Hargrove with Republican Nancy Wyatt in third.
Simpson's tally came in at 6,191, nearly 40 percent, Hargrove 5,987, about 39 percent, and Wyatt 3,320 at 21 percent.
The state now uses the top-two primary, which means the two legislative candidates in each race with the most votes move on to the general election, regardless of party affiliation. Races with two candidates are listed on the primary ballot, which allows voters to write-in a candidate.
In the Position No. 2 race for the state House in the 47th incumbent Pat Sullivan, Democrat, took in 8,511 votes, 55 percent over Republican Rodrigo Yanez at 6,835 with 44 percent.
